Breaking the Silence

It’s time to break my self-imposed silence. I know I haven’t posted in almost two weeks, due to illnesses making the rounds in my household. This cold, damp spring has been killing all of our health, and some days checking my email is a herculean task. I’m on the mend though, and received my first affiliate marketing check yesterday, so I’m feeling revitalized.

With my renewed sense of purpose, I realize that I need to focus on what’s important: making money. As it stands, I need to focus on the prize, and blogging isn’t going to get me any closer to it.

I know I’m not going to make money by blogging, and that has never been the intention. If I want to make money by writing, I’ll do it in a different fashion than by writing about how to make money. There are no ads on this site, and I plan to keep it that way. This is my personal blog, and I have no intention of whoring myself like John Chow, or others like him. Not that I have anything against what he’s doing, but that isn’t me.

This blog is still going to be a dumping ground for information I need to keep an eye on, but I don’t think I’m going to be blogging per se with any regularity, since I feel that my time and energy needs to be focused on making money, not just watching others make money and talking about it.

Last night I watched the 2002 John Leguizamo movie “Empire.” It’s the story of a drug dealer trying to go legit after he finds out his girlfriend is pregnant. The story has some parallels to my life. Although I’m not involved with anything illegal, I want to legitimize my life and what I do.

When I was a kid, I was continually beat about the head constantly hearing about my ‘potential’ and failure to live up to it. I’m smart, testing somewhere in th 140 range on my IQ. I’m not the smartest person in the world, but I am smarter than your average bear.

As soon as my teachers found that out, I was constantly lectured about my potential. The problem is, none of them, not a single one, actually told me how to realize my potential. I later learned that the majority of education majors graduate in the bottom 50% of their college class.

Anyway, I’ve had the onus of realizing my potential saddled upon me for most of my life. The fact that I work in a factory and am wasting my fabled ‘potential’ means that I’ve become the black sheep of my family.

I make decent money, but I have to kill myself to do it. I come home every day bleeding from dozens of sheet metal cuts, metal slivers everywhere, coated in grease and hydraulic oil, coughing out the remnant of burning heavy metals that I’ve had to breathe in for 8 hours.

That’s why I decided to try affiliate marketing - so that I could enjoy life, and eventually rub everybody’s noses in my success. The check sitting here on my desk proves that I can do it, as long as I put my nose to the grindstone.

I’m going to finish this post with a monologue from Empire. The truth in his speech inspired me, and helped me to clarify what’s important.

We all know selling and competition, that’s what this country’s built on.
It’s all about one thing: making money.
Money, baby. Simple as that.
Everything else is just bullshit.
Money is why people come here from every country in the world.
It’s what the American dream is all about.
You think people come here from all over the world to live in East New York…
in Harlem, the South Bronx…
because of the beautiful views, because of the fucking quality of life?

For everybody– everybody– money is what life is all about.
Getting it, keeping it, losing it, holding it…
needing it, living it and dying for it.
You have to look like you got it, whether you do or not.

“Do Follow” Directory Updated

I’ve updated the “Do Follow” list. Firstly I seperated Forums from Blogs. I also added the following Blogs tonight:

Page Rank 7:

http://everything.typepad.com/

Page Rank 6:

http://www.gadgetell.com/
http://www.blogherald.com/
http://foolswisdom.com/
http://lifelearningtoday.com/

http://lifelearningtoday.com
http://mobilesociety.typepad.com
http://adamboulton.typepad.com
http://alexanderstreet.typepad.com

I’ll keep updating on as often as possible. I have at least 250 blogs to add, minimum, but the most difficult part is working up the ambition to start transcribing a list of that size. Hope the list comes in handy!

Life is What Happens When You’re Making Other Plans

Hey all.

I know I’ve been uncharacteristically quiet as of late, and I apologize for that. Life has blown up around here, and even getting 10 minutes at the computer is an accomplishment.

The time change this weekend has completely thrown my 16 month old daughter off of her schedule, and she’s making it hell on everybody. Thankfully my wife is laid off, so I can go to bed at a reasonable time. Otherwise, I’d be greatly increasing my chances of running my hand into some heavy machinery at work.

I went into the doctor yesterday to have a pain that I’ve been experiencing for the last 4-5 months. It turns out that I have the beginnings of a hernia. I see a specialist on Tuesday to see if operation is necessary. I hope not, since I’m not preparred mentally for two weeks off of work. *sigh*

I’ve been trying to reformulate my affiliate marketing strategy, since my current efforts have basically stalled out. The last sale I made was two weeks ago, and nothing since. I finally shut off AdWords last week rather than throwing my money down a hole. I was hoping that I’d be able to replace my wife’s lost revenue, but I’m apparently doing something wrong.

Anyway, this weekend the wife and kid are out of town, so I should be able to blast out a linkstorm along the lines of what has come previously. Hopefully I’ll be able to pick back up on blogging, or just move to a more specific schedule.

Win a Free Case of Red Bull Energy Drinks!

Alright folks, here’s the skinny on what I’ve been hinting around about for the last week. It’s BookMarkMoney.com’s first contest.

Starting March 3rd, and running until April 3rd the main BookMarkMoney site will be running a contest. The rules are pretty simple: The member with the most posts as of midnight April 3rd wins a case of Red Bull Energy Drinks. Second Place wins a $25 gift card to Amazon.com. Third Place nets a $15 gift card to Amazon.com.

How to Win

1. Create an account on BookMarkMoney.com

2. Blog about this contest with a link back to this page, and BookMarkMoney.com

3. Put your Name and your Blog Post URL in comment

4. Post away at BookMarkMoney.com

Now for the fine print:

1. Posts must be quality AND related to the theme of BookMarkMoney.com.

2. Minimum of 15 posts must be made to qualify.

I do reserve the right to change the rules at any point if I detect cheating. Otherwise, it’s open season on posting!

This last bit is just for the guys. Egotastic was kind enough to bless us with Olivia Munn’s Complex Magazine photo shoot. Anyway, enjoy the eye candy, and I have a couple of big announcements coming down the pike this weekend. Stay Tuned!

DIY CNC Machinery

This post doesn’t have anything to do with making money online. However, if you’re interested in making money at home with some moderately expensive machinery, then I’ve got links to some pretty authoratative sites. Everything you need to build a 2, 3, or 4 access CNC machining center from scratch for minimal cost.

Building my own 2 axis CNC machine has been something I’ve been considering for a while, ever since I got the free dvd from PlasmaCam that I saw advertised in an issue of Popular Science a couple of years ago. The possibilities of what you can make with a CNC Router / Plasma Cutter are basically only limited to your imagination. I’ve been considering dipping my foot into the custom cabinetry field, but if I ever do so, nested based manufacturing will be go from day one.

I’m lucky in that I work in a factory, and can buy bulk metal from the company I work for, shear it to size, bend it any way I want on a brake press, and have the guys in tool and die machine some of the trickier parts. Not everyone has access to an entire manufacturing establishment. Even so, my major limitation is space, so when I build mine, it’ll probably be a fixed gantry/moving table design, rather than a gantry that moves on the X and Y axes.

For my first effort, I think it’ll be easier to build feed rollers to push the workpiece through, rather than dealing with building the railing and screws required for motion along the length as well as the width. Think of a giant printer, except instead of paper it’ll use 4′ x 8′ sheets of plywood, and instead of ink, it’ll use a router spinning at 20,000 RPM’s.

Majosoft is an amazing resource for CNC hobbyists. They have everything from plans for engraving machines up to full traveling gantry systems, and everything in between. Clamping devices, programming, software - this site has everything but the kitchen sink.

PM in MO focuses on portable, modular components for DIY CNC projects. They feature everything from PCB (printed circuit board) designs, stepper motors, and hardware drivers.

CNC Zone Forums are the ultimate hangout for CNC geeks. Ask, and ye shall receive an answer.

Debating whether I’m going to the day job tomorrow. Had freezing rain all day, and a couple of inches of snow. By tomorrow we’re supposed to have 3-5 inches more of the crap, with high winds anticipated. I’d rather stay home and read ‘Red Dragon.’

I turned in my request for vacation next month. Soilwork is coming through Iowa, and less than 30 miles away from me. I’m totally in. Plus, they’re playing in a 150-200 person club. I’ll be lucky if they don’t literally rock my face off. Next on my wishlist, please come back Rammstein! They came through with Slipknot and System of a Down back in 2001, but I had to miss it for a college class that had 100% mandatory attendance for the semester. To this day the fact that I missed Rammstein makes me sad inside :(

Speaking of Rammstein, I spent Saturday morning listening to the new album by Emigrate, a side project by one of Rammstein’s guitarists. It’s a pretty good effort, but some riffs seem almost directly transferred from existing Rammstein songs. I didn’t care much for their politics either, but I usually don’t if I’m not listening to Hardcore bands. Overall, I give it a plus, and I do plan on doing an in-depth review at some point.

I went and saw the doctor today. Bronchitis and sinus infection. Just my usual monthly infections. Working with burning metal and aerosolicized petroleum producs takes its toll on my asthma.

It sounds like next weekend I’m going to go read for a part in an indie movie they’re filming close to here. I’m probably just throwing away part of my Saturday, but I’ll be hanging out with good friends, so it’ll definitely be a laugh.

Finally, here’s a recipe for your enjoyment: Buffalo Chicken Salad.

Take 6-8 boneless/skinless chicken tenders and place in crock pot with 16oz Hot Sauce and 1 stick margarine. Cook on high for three hours.
Crush 1 handfull of original Doritos or taco chips in the bottom of a bowl.
Add Lettuce.
Shred chicken and place on salad.
Shred pepper jack cheese over everything.
Enjoy!
